Today we went on a search for a piece of long forgotten history. Our Geocaching adventure for the day takes us in search of an old section of Florida State Road 50 in Sumter County.
State Road 50 runs through the center of Florida from Titusville, through Orlando, to Weeki Wachee on the Gulf of Mexico. After many road improvements and realignments, some of the original sections of roadway are no longer in use and have been long forgotten.
Just one of the reasons we like Geocaching is that there is usually another cacher out there whose found these long forgotten places of interest. So we headed out west of Orlando through Clermont to the other side of Groveland where it turns into a 2 lane blacktop.
Just west Tarrytown, FL is County Road 757 / Riverland Road which is the new name for the old State Road 50. But after a short drive down CR757, we run into a dead end. Go figure. I'm just a 1/4 mile from the cache, and there's a fence posted with "No Trespassing" signs. So back to the new Hwy 50 to find another way in.
Continuing west a few more miles, we find a dirt road heading into the right direction. Just what I like to see when we're in the Jeep! We take the short dirt road over to a very roughly paved Riverland Rd. The dirt road was smoother than this!
Our first cache was
GCJ8R2 to the south. A quick find then back north to
GC1MFYA,
GC1RVA8, and
GC1RV92. I like finding these old forgotten sections of highway. Overgrown and broken down sections of bridges and even a nearby railroad trail and parts of that bridge.
Enjoy the photos below and if you haven't started Geocaching yourself, you're missing out on some fun.
Thanks again for visiting and see you soon.
