Wekiva Springs State Park in Apopka, Florida
dot

September 17, 2005

This past Monday, we left Thousand Trails and headed back to Lazy Days in Tampa to have the front TV re-installed in the RV. They also finally got the back TV working with the satellite separate from the front. While we were there, the Blazer was next door at Camping World having the tow bars and all installed. Now we can tow it behind the RV so Cricket can ride with us. The way back to Orlando was only her second ride in it!

Wednesday we came back to Orlando and decided to stay at the Wekiva Springs State Park in Apopka Florida. We've visited here before to go swimming in the springs, but never camped out. We arrived late so couldn't do much the first night but setup camp.

On Thursday, I had a lot of errands to run so I was gone most of the day. Getting the brakes and a few other items serviced on the Blazer took the majority of the day. Cricket and the boys went down to the springs after their homeschool lessons. They had a great time swimming in the cool springs.

Friday was another story. After the kids did their homeschool lessons and ate lunch, we went bike riding on one of the many trails here. As it turns out, the route we took was actually a hiking trail and not the bike trail. But it was fun none the less. After that, Cricket and the boys were pooped and wanted to take a break. So they headed back to the RV. I still had some energy so I decided to check out the marked bike trail to see if it would be good for the kids another day. The problem was that I went without the map!

The first part of the trail I took was a hot, dry, sandy part of the course. It took a lot out of me to get through it and I used up all my water. After an hour, I called Cricket to have her look at the map and see if there might be a quicker way back taking one of the other trails that intersect. The problem came because the service roads are not on the map. I ended up making some turns that I shouldn't have. After another hour went by I was completely worn out. So I asked her to go up to the ranger station, give them my location, and have them come and pick me up. Not having any water, I had no energy to try and return on my own. Plus it was getting late.

Today was a better day. I went out early to get some great sunrise photos over Sand Lake. Later this afternoon, we all went on a trail ride with our bikes. Then after dinner, I went by myself again. This time I took the map with me! It was a fun trail from post #5 all the way just past post #13. I wanted to continue, but the sun was setting and I needed to get back before the rangers had to come and get me again. Hopefully, before we leave here I'll get to complete that trail.

Anyway, I've posted all the photos from this week below. And be sure to come back in a few days for the next update.
